Knoxville Bar Association
Approved for Dual CLE Credit, Law Office Management, Solo & Small Firm
The CLE Program "Using Data and Analytics to Manage and Improve Your Law Firm + Ethics of Securing your Data" was originally presented and recorded on April 11, 2019.
What does day to day management of a law firm look like when the data from software tools and analytics are used to make decisions? The old adage goes “what gets measured gets managed”. You can track a lot of data now, from client satisfaction, utilization rates, and receivables, to intake, conversion rates, website traffic and social media mentions. With the right know-how, you have the ability to track and measure this data to begin predicting what the next few months of business will look like for your law firm. With more data comes the issue of data security and in this session the presenter will cover: (1) The data you should track to calculate the leading indicators of your law firm’s future success; (2) Using scorecards to drive the management of your law firm; (3) Real examples from a successful data-driven law practice; (4) How Model Rule 1.1 on Competence, Rule 1.6 on Confidentiality, and Rule 5.3 on Nonlawyer Assistance are requiring law firms to be up to date on data security issues; (5) The most current “Reasonable Efforts” to understand about data security; and (6) Cloud Computing and the latest cloud computing ethics opinions. Following this CLE course, lawyers will understand the various technologies available to them to help improve how they best use data to better manage their law firm and the latest data security approaches law firms need to take to stay in compliance with their state’s professional ethics rules.
