How do you help our members?
As part of the LRIS, I assist both KBA members and the community. I help provide potential clients with appropriate legal services and our members with an opportunity to build their law practice. Many Knoxville area residents may need legal services but do not know an attorney or know how to find one in the appropriate area of law. As part of the LRIS, I can pre-screen each case and connect the individual with an experienced panel member.
What is a typical day for you?
I start my typical day by arriving slightly earlier than my scheduled start time to check emails, voicemails, and review follow-up notes from the previous day. I turn on the LRIS telephone line at 9 a.m. and start taking incoming calls. I listen closely to each caller and determine if the individual would be best served by a referral to an attorney or by a referral to another service or agency. If an attorney referral is needed, I request only basic information to process the referral. The information is sent confidentially to a panel member experienced in the appropriate area of the law for consultation and possible representation. In some cases, additional information may be needed to process a referral. In these instances, I email panel members to perform a conflict check or research the appropriateness of client eligibility. I take great pride in my ability to listen to the caller’s needs and properly direct them to an appropriate attorney.
Tell us more about yourself.
I was born in Maryville, TN, to an extremely close-knit family. Growing up, my sister and I spent every weekend with our parents either camping in the Smokies, visiting the grandparents, attending school activities and sports practices, or taking road trips in search of something new. After graduating from Maryville High School, I attended Maryville College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English/Writing & Communications. Following graduation, I went to work for a student loan company in marketing. An overhaul in the student loan industry forced me to seek a new career. I studied and received my insurance license and started selling personal lines insurance in multiple states. I loved the customer interaction. I loved listening to the customers’ problems and developing a plan and a solution. After almost three years of insurance sales, I had the opportunity to move to North Dakota; however, I grew homesick and returned to my roots. I always possessed a fascination for the law and learning, so I returned to college and received an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies from Pellissippi State Community College. Before joining the KBA, I worked as a paralegal for a sole practitioner in Alcoa, TN, where I most enjoyed my one-on-one interaction with the clients and researching legal issues. Outside of work, I remain very family focused. I spend most of my time and energy on my 6-year old daughter. We love crafting, reading and going on adventures.
