Knoxville Bar Association Barristers celebrates Constitution Day with Third Grade Students
KNOXVILLE, TN September 17, 2018 - The Barristers, the Young Lawyers Division of the Knoxville Bar Association, will be celebrating Constitution Day with third grade students at Christenberry Elementary. Constitution Day is an American federal observance that commemorates the formation and signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787. In Knoxville, members of the Barristers, with support from Knox County Schools, have developed a pilot civics education program for third-grade students. The program, which the Barristers hope is implemented district-wide in the future, teaches students about the importance of the U.S. Constitution and the rights and freedoms it protects. The Barristers also provided each student with a pocket copy of the Constitution.
This year on Constitution Day, third-grade students at Christenberry Elementary will give presentations on what they learned about the Constitution to three judges: United States Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne H. Bauknight, General Sessions Judge Charles A. Cerny, Jr., and Judge Lisa A. Lowe of the Tennessee Court of Workers Compensation Claims. After the presentations, the judges will talk with the students about the importance of the Constitution and how it affects their job.

The Barristers are lawyers who are members of the Knoxville Bar Association and who are under 36 years of age or who have been practicing law less than five years. Probably no other local bar association and group of young attorneys work harder or have a more diverse list of public service opportunities than those right here in Knoxville. While providing valuable and appreciated public service, these young lawyers have fun enjoying each other and enjoying serving others.
For more information about the Barristers, please contact Barristers President T. Mitchell Panter at (865) 525-0880 or Marsha S. Watson, Executive Director of the Knoxville Bar Association at (865) 522-6522.
