Richard Stanley “Dick” Wirtz - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

Richard Stanley “Dick” Wirtz

Posted on: May 17, 2019

Richard Stanley “Dick” Wirtz (June 15, 1940, Evanston, IL - January 3, 2019, Knoxville, TN). After earning a B.A. from Amherst College and a Master’s from Princeton University, Dick received his J.D. from Stanford University Law School in 1970. He clerked for a federal judge in New Orleans and then spent three years practicing law in Seattle before becoming a member of the faculty of the UT College of Law in 1974, where he was an award-winning teacher. In 1988, he joined the College of Law’s administration, and in 1992 he was appointed its dean. After completing his deanship, he returned to teaching; he became an emeritus professor of law in 2004 and continued to teach until 2010. During and after his tenure with the College of Law, he published articles in various legal journals and put in countless volunteer hours with many different local, regional, and national groups. Dick was a writer, reader, teacher, and traveler, strong of heart with a seeker's mind. He had a passion for music, ideas, and journeys of all kinds, especially those taken with Margaret Ann “Peggy” Hickman Wirtz, his best friend and lifelong love, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughters Margy Wirtz-Henry and Liza Q. Wirtz and their partners, by his brother Philip Wirtz, and by numerous other beloved relatives and friends.

Date of Birth: June 15, 1940
Date of Death: January 3, 2019
