Frederick Duncan McDonald - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

Frederick Duncan McDonald

Posted on: Dec 31, 2014

Frederick Duncan McDonald died on Jan. 25, 2014, at age 85. A native of Michigan and a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, he served in the US Army Judge Advocate General Corps in the Pentagon and later in the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea during the Korean War. He moved to Knoxville in 1968 to practice law and was appointed Chancellor by Gov. Winfield Dunn in 1973. That appointment was delayed a few months until McDonald met the state constitution's five year residency requirement. After formally taking the bench, McDonald went on to be elected to three consecutive terms. He presided over several high profile cases including litigation involving the collapse of the Butcher brothers banking empire, the 1982 World's Fair, the consolidation of the Knoxville City and Knox County school systems, and the construction of the City County Building and Thompson Boling arena at the University of Tennessee. He served as president of the Tennessee State Judicial Conference and was a longtime member and past president of the Knoxville Exchange Club.
