Willard Nathaniel Albert - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

Willard Nathaniel Albert

Posted on: Dec 31, 2013

Willard Nathaniel Albert was born in New York City in 1922. He attended the University of Miami, earned a Bachelor's of Art degree at Allegheny College and received a scholarship to Duke University Law School. One year later he volunteered into the Army Air Force as Air Cadet and was later discharged with a service-connected disability in May 1943. He was accepted into the first group to qualify under the GI Bill and completed his legal education at University of Tennessee Law School in 1945, receiving an LLB and Doctorate of Jurisprudence. Mr. Albert was employed by Kellex during the Manhattan Project years in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and received an award from the War Department for his contributions and development of the atomic bomb. Mr. Albert practiced with Charles Davis, Ray Jenkins and Senator Morrell prior to opening his own offices, first in the Bearden area and later in Fountain City. He built his office at 5344 North Broadway, being one of the first attorneys to establish a practice outside the city district, where he practiced until he retired as a well-respected attorney at the age of 88. He passed away on September 14, 2013. Mr. Albert helped establish the Boys Club of Knoxville and served as its first Athletic Director. He also worked with Tom Anderson, Sports Editor of the Knoxville Journal and covered high school sports and inaugurated the first City/County All-Star teams. He served as Transportation Director and Beer Board Director, President of the Optimist Club and assisted in the organization and building of Dutch Valley Church of God and later West Haven Ministries.
