John M. Smartt - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

John M. Smartt

Posted on: Dec 31, 2013

John Madison Smartt was born February 24, 1919, and died peacefully in Knoxville on November 13, 2013. He attended the University of Tennessee and was a charter member of Omicron Delta Kappa, President of the Independent Students Assoc., and graduated with a B.S. in Agriculture in 1942. During World War II he served as an army officer in the Aleutian Islands before returning to UT and receiving a law degree in 1948. He was the UT Director of Alumni Affairs from 1948-69 before joining the law firm of Fowler, Rowntree & Robinson. Later he was associated with Ambrose, Wilson, Grimm & Durand. He co-coordinated the Tennessee Law Institute, which offers continuing education to attorneys across the state, from 1972-88. In 1950, he and his wife joined Second Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, and he served as elder, Sunday School teacher, and member of the Joy Singers Choir. He was a loyal supporter of UT athletics and charter member of the Lady Vols Boost-Her Club. He served as head timer for the Vols swim teams from 1970-78. From 1980-2012 he competed in all the running events at district and state Senior Olympics meets. He represented Tennessee in the 1995 National Senior Games in San Antonio and won a fifth place award in the 75-79 age group. In 1996 he was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch from James White Fort to Neyland Drive as it passed through Knoxville en route to Atlanta for the Summer Olympics. His favorite pastimes were helping raise money for United Way and the Kiwanis Fresh-Air Camp, delivering weekly food for FISH Hospitality Pantries, singing Christmas carols while ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, and leading wildflower hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains.
