Ann Kirby Nigro - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

Ann Kirby Nigro

Posted on: Dec 31, 2012

Ann Kirby Nigro, 93 passed away on August 22, 2012. Farragut High School (1937) valedictorian, she earned her B.A. from the University of Tennessee. Inspired by her uncle (and attorney), Scroop Styles, to attend law school, Ann graduated from UT College of Law in 1943, the only woman in her class and the first female law student to win the Moot Court award. She practiced law with Southern & Southern and, later, with her husband, Joe J. Nigro. She distinguished herself as a public speaker and legal expert: East Tennessee Toastmistress Club charter member, Tennessee Alpha Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians co-founder, Knox Clean Air League speaker’s bureau, and Constitutional Bicentennial Commission (Knoxville/Knox County) member. An active member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church for over 50 years, Ann authored the congregation’s official history, sang in the chancel choir, and was a member of the J. Ray Stuart Sunday School class. After her health prevented her from attending services, she continued to work on behalf of the church calling church members and serving with the prayer ministry. Ann is survived by daughter, Joanne Nigro Simpson; grandson, Rob Simpson; one sister, several nieces and nephews, two brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law.
