Honorable William H. Inman - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

Honorable William H. Inman

Posted on: Dec 31, 2010

Hon. William Howell Inman died on January 31, 2010. He was born in Hamblen County on October 3, 1926. He attended Morristown High School until his seventeenth birthday, at which time he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  After his discharge, he finished high school and immediately enrolled in Cumberland College.  He graduated from the Cumberland College School of Law in 1950 with a law degree.  He again served in the Navy during the Korean War as a commissioned officer, serving as trial prosecutor at Headquarters of the 6th Naval District. He was discharged from active duty in 1952 with the rank of Navy Lieutenant, returning to Morristown to begin the private practice of law, ultimately forming a partnership with Earnest R. Taylor. In 1972, he was appointed by Governor Winfield Dunn as Chancellor of the Fifteenth Chancery Division. During his tenure as Chancellor he edited and largely re-wrote GIBSONS SUITS IN CHANCERY, a treatise still used by Tennessee lawyers. He served as Chancellor until July 1984, at which time he agreed to serve as Governor Lamar Alexander's chief legal counsel. In addition to being Governor Alexander's legal counsel, he also was appointed Commissioner of Insurance and Banking. Upon the expiration of Governor Alexander's term in 1987, Judge Inman was appointed a Senior Judge for the State of Tennessee, devoting the majority of his time to the Court of Appeals in Knoxville. He finally retired in December 2005. Judge Inman was survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Billie; his brother, Harry Inman, Jr.; his daughter, Olivia King Inman; his son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Hisey Inman and wife, Jacqui; his granddaughter, Sharon Inman Greene and her husband Stan; and his two great-grandsons, Sean and Samuel Greene.
