Joe R. Haynes Jr. - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

Joe R. Haynes Jr.

Joe R. Haynes, Jr. attended Carson-Newman College where he received his B.A. degree in 1943. Joe voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and became a B-17 pilot. After leaving the military, he returned to Knoxville and attended the University Of Tennessee College Of Law, receiving his J.D. in June, 1948. Joe began his legal career with Cecil D. Meek, Sr., and he continued to practice with what ultimately became the firm of Haynes, Meek and Summers until his retirement in 1991. Joe served the legal community as President of the Knoxville Bar Association in 1966, as a member of the TBA Board of Governors and as a member of the ABA. He was a Fellow of the Knoxville Bar Foundation and President of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity. In 2004, Joe received the Governor’s Award, the highest award given by the Knoxville Bar Association in recognition of his exemplary legal career and his community service.
