Toxey Hannon Sewell - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

Toxey Hannon Sewell

Posted on: Dec 31, 2009

Toxey H. Sewell was known as “Professor Sewell” to a generation of University of Tennessee College of Law students, Toxey is remembered by all for his capacity to be rigorous and demanding while also being kind and considerate. His first-year Property class was a fitting introduction to the study of law and a pragmatic starting point for a career in law. His retirement from the College after 20 years’ service on the faculty, was lamented by his students and former students. Toxey Hannon Sewell was born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1920 and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. He took his B. A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Alabama, and an LL.M. from Georgetown University. He married Marjorie McKinnon who, with their five sons, survives him. Toxey practiced law briefly in Atlanta, then had a distinguished career in the U. S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps, retiring at the rank of full Colonel after 24 years’ service. Upon leaving the Army, Toxey came to Knoxville and, in 1965, began his second distinguished career as a teacher and scholar at the College of Law. After retiring from the faculty in 1985, Toxey and Marjorie moved to Niceville, Florida, where he passed away on January 10, 2009.
