Judge James B. Scott - In Memoriam

The Knoxville Bar Association and its members remember the friends of the association who may be gone, but not forgotten. We value their service to the community through their work toward justice and hope that this may serve as a tribute to them.

Judge James B. Scott

Posted on: Dec 23, 2019

Judge James B. (Buddy) Scott was born on November 7, 1935 in Charleston, West Virginia. He passed away May 9, 2019 after setting an example as a judge who was committed to treating all those he encountered with empathy and fairness. It was at a very early age through his mother and father that he acquired a high level of respect for hard work, commitment and family through being exposed to plight of the West Virginia coal miners at a very young age. At the age of eight, he moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he developed a unique respect for governmental service, values, and integrity of social purpose through his family’s work on the Manhattan project in protecting the United States through World War II, and the future. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1954 to go on to play football at the University of Tennessee. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1965, going on to be an Assistant District Attorney for Roane, Loudon, Morgan, Meigs, and Blount Counties. He was elected as the District Attorney General in Anderson County in 1976, and accepted the gubernatorial appointment as the Circuit and Criminal Court judge of the 6th Judicial District for Anderson County where he served the state with honor, diligence, and respect for 30 years. Judge Scott used those important values he developed and committed them to his wife Mildred, his son Jim, daughters Dana and Annie, his many grandchildren, friends, and of highest importance the people and attorneys that appeared in his court attempting to administer justice with empathy, fairness, and dignity to serve society, and all members of the Knox, Anderson, and surrounding bar associations throughout the state.
