Summary

The KBA CLE program "Refugee Adjustment of Status: A Primer for Volunteer Attorneys" was originally presented and recorded on April 9, 2026.

Refugees admitted to the United States are eligible to adjust to lawful permanent resident status after one year of physical presence. DHS recently asserted its authority to detain refugees who have not filed their application for adjustment of status within one year of their entry. This CLE is designed to introduce attorneys to the adjustment of status for refugees framework under INA § 209 and to learn how to complete an adjustment of status application. This CLE will also address our ethical obligations when supervising volunteer-driven workshops, including Rule 1.1 (Competence), Rule 1.6 (Confidentiality), and Rule 1.7 (Conflicts of Interest).

Presented by: Arléne Amparo Amarante, Interim Executive Director, Adelante (Knoxville, TN)

(If you have any questions about the program, please contact the speaker at arlene@adelanteknox.org)

Approved for 1 hour of General CLE Credit
