Join us for the “What’s in the Box? Unlocking Event Data Recorder Evidence in Vehicle Crash Investigations" CLE program on Thursday, August 20, 2026, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the City County Building, Small Assembly Room.
Event Data Recorders (EDRs)—often referred to as vehicle “black boxes”—are increasingly central to modern crash investigation and litigation. In this one-hour CLE, Assistant District Attorney Mitch Eisenberg and Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper John Capps provide a practical, cross-disciplinary introduction to EDR technology applicable to both civil and criminal practitioners. The program covers what EDRs are and the types of data they may capture (e.g., speed, braking, throttle position, seatbelt use, and pre-impact events), how that data is lawfully accessed and preserved, and the tools and software used to download and interpret the data. Presenters will discuss current capabilities and limitations, common pitfalls, and emerging developments in the field. Attendees will also gain understanding on how to effectively use EDR evidence in charging decisions, plea negotiations, trial strategy, and civil liability analysis, including foundational requirements, expert testimony considerations, and admissibility challenges. The session includes a hands-on demonstration of the hardware, cables, and computer systems used to retrieve EDR data.
Presenters: Mitch Eisenberg, Assistant District Attorney General, 6th Judicial District, John Capps, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Critical Incident Response Team 1, and Dallas T. Reynolds III, Reynolds, Adkins, Brezina & Stewart, PLLC
A buffet lunch will be included with CLE registration. The lunch buffet will open at Noon, and the CLE will begin at 12:30 p.m.
An additional $5 fee applies when paying during late registration—call (865) 522-6522 with questions.
