U.S. District Judge J. Ronnie Greer has notified the President of his intent to retire to senior status on June 30, 2018. Although Judge Greer will vacate an active position on the bench, he will continue to serve as a senior judge with a reduced caseload. President Trump will appoint a successor, subject to the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate. 

Judge Greer was orginally nominated as a district judge by President George W. Bush on April 9, 2003 and confirmed by the Senate on June 11, 2003, filling the position vacated by Judge Thomas Gray Hull. Judge Greer began his service as a district judge on June 12, 2003.

Chief Judge Thomas A. Varlan, who began his federal judgeship the same year as Judge Greer, commented: "Judge Greer has served the public with great distinction as a U.S. District Judge, and during his tenure he has handled a myriad number of complex civil and criminal cases. He will be greatly missed as an active district judge, but the Cout is very appreciative of his willingness to continue to hear cases as a senior judge of the district."
