Notice from the Criminal, General Sessions Criminal Div. & Fourth Circuit Court Clerk’s Office

Posted on: Jul 1, 2026

Notice from the Knox County Criminal, General Sessions - Criminal Division, and Fourth Circuit Court Clerk’s Office:

"Our office has partnered with TBI over the past year to help develop a fully paperless and more efficient expungement process. Over the last several months, we have conducted a limited rollout of this new system to identify and resolve any issues, and we are working diligently toward expanding the process to include all Knox County expungements. Effective immediately, we ask that all attorneys follow the new procedures.

Currently Eligible for Paperless Processing

  • General Sessions Court Cases
    • All dismissals
    • Completed judicial diversion cases with a $100 non-refundable filing fee paid
    • Dismissals conditioned upon payment of court costs paid in full

Not Currently Eligible for Paperless Processing

  • Traffic Citations
  • Criminal Court Cases
  • Conviction Expungements

How the Process Works

  1. Attorney emails the following information to crim.expungements@knoxcounty.org
    1. Defendant's name and IDN
    2. Warrant number
    3. Case disposition (e.g., "Dismissed")
  2. Attorney provides a preferred email address.
  3. An email from a TBI.TN.gov address is sent with a Flex-Check link.
  4. Attorney verifies the client's date of birth.
  5. The request moves through electronic review and signature by:
    1. District Attorney's Office
    2. Judge
  6. The completed order is sent to TBI for processing.
  7. After processing, the final signed and completed expungement order is emailed back to the attorney.
  8. Certified Copies - If a certified copy is needed, it can be obtained from the clerk's office for a $5 certification fee.

Please contact our office if you have any questions."
