Law Student Associate Member Category

At the KBA Annual Meeting in December 2002, the membership of the Knoxville Bar Association unanimously voted to support the bylaws change proposed to open our ranks to law students. The following language was approved:

Any law student currently attending or enrolled in a law school shall be eligible to become an associate member of the Association, subject to such rules and upon payment of such dues as may be further determined by the Board. Any such associate member shall not be eligible to hold office in the Association and shall have no voting rights whatsoever, whether in any meetings, elections, activities or other functions of the members of the Association, but shall otherwise be entitled to all of the other rights and privileges of membership in the Association.

The membership dues have been set at $25 per year which will allow you to receive a copy of all of our publications, including the monthly newsletter and the Annual Attorney's Directory. As a member, you are welcome to participate in any KBA activity and pay the reduced member rate if there is a registration fee. I think you'll agree with me that the cost/benefit ratio of dues to membership privileges vastly favors becoming a KBA student member. The cost of the publications you will receive alone is more than the student membership dues you will pay.

The KBA is dedicated to meeting the needs of its members, the greater Knoxville community, and the legal profession as a whole. Our various services range from continuing legal education programs (at a reduced cost for members), to the publication of a monthly newsletter, DICTA, to the maintenance of an award-winning website loaded with resources. Adhering to the philosophy that "to whom much is given, much is expected," the KBA offers members the opportunity to dedicate time and energy to a diverse number of philanthropic activities, such as building homes with Habitat for Humanity, for the greater good of the community. Our legislative and interprofessionalism committees provide a strong collective voice for our members to address issues affecting lawyers and the community at large.

At the same time, we believe that all work and no play makes for dull lawyers; therefore the KBA offers a host of opportunities to socialize with other members and get to know those serving in the community around you. The KBA even assists lawyers with placement opportunities and staffing needs. While this list is not exhaustive, it is a sample of the benefits you may enjoy and the contributions you may make as a member of the KBA. Collectively, the KBA operates as our voice in the community and offers a way to make a difference. Individually, the KBA allows attorneys to develop their practices to network and socialize with fellow colleagues, and to benefit from the collective contributions of their fellow members.
