I have been a solo practitioner since I was admitted to the Bar in 1997, focusing mainly on general civil cases in all state and federal courts. For the past seven or eight years, the majority of my work has been family law related, mostly in Knox and all surrounding counties. I am in court an average of three or four days a week on any variety of contested trials or routine motions involving divorces, child support, grandparent visitation, custody, parenting plans, orders of protection, adoptions, and paternity actions. I accept a fair amount of appointed work from the four Knox County Child Support Magistrates for defendants in child support contempt actions, and for indigent parents in Juvenile Court dependency and neglect cases and termination of parental rights. I also have been a long-standing appointee as a Guardian ad Litem for children in Juvenile Court.
What attributes do you possess that make you qualified for this position?
As a trial lawyer for the past 16 plus years I have been in the trenches doing the day-to-day work on the kinds of cases that make up the bulk of the docket for 4th Circuit Court. I have seen first-hand the economic and psychological impact on parties and their children in divorces, domestic violence cases and Juvenile Court appeals. I have experienced this Court's various Local Rules from both sides. I see a real need for 4th Circuit's unique Local Rules in some cases but I also understand that the rules must be compatible with the Constitutional ideals of due process both in theory and in practice. As the next Judge of 4th Circuit Court, I will strive to conduct the Court in a manner that instills a sense of fundamental fairness among the litigants, the local bar and the general public.
