How do I login to the KBA website and access the members-only section?

If you have not logged into the Members Only Section before, you must first establish your password for the KBA's new online log-in process. Click on Members Login at the top of any page. Click Set/Reset My Password to begin the process of establishing your password. Enter your e-mail address and you will receive a confirmation e-mail containing instructions and a link to set your password. Passwords can be reset as often as you like.

How do I change my contact information?

Any changes to your membership record must be submitted in writing. You may login to the members-only section of the website to update your contact information online (use the myKBA Profile). If you would prefer to mail your new information to the Knoxville Bar Association, please send your updated contact information to the KBA at P.O. Box 2027, Knoxville, TN 37901-2027.

How do I update my practice areas and certified specialties in myKBA?

Login to the members only section and use the myKBA Profile section. This will allow the KBA to communicate relevant benefits based on your practice areas and preferences.

What is the cost of membership and when are my fees due?

Membership dues are based on how many years you have been licensed. Dues are $150 for attorneys licensed to practice 5 years or more in any state. Dues are $100 for attorneys licensed to practice less than five years; all university professors, clerks of court, government or public service attorneys; attorneys practicing in a part-time capacity (less than 12 hours per week); and attorneys who do not have a law office located in Knoxville or Knox County. KBA annual dues are figured on a calendar year basis. Dues for new member applicants who join the KBA after August 1st will be applied to the following year's dues.

How can I meet my CLE requirements through the KBA and how do I register?

View a list of all CLE seminars and register online. The KBA sponsors over 80 continuing legal education programs a year that feature expert speakers and comprehensive written materials offered at a discount rate to KBA members. Our CLE website will provide you with an entire catalog of live and online CLE programs. You will find it easy to navigate and we believe that you will see that our site offers functionality not provided by other CLE providers.

How do I view my KBA CLE credit history?

Login to the members-only section of the KBA website and view your myKBA Profile. Select the tab for "CLE Tracker" to review all the KBA CLE courses you have taken.

How many online CLE courses can I take?

Distance learning credit is limited to eight hours per year. The KBA CLE catalog currently has numerous online CLE programs that have been recorded from our "live" seminars held in the past year. The videos are high quality and require no special programs or software, or there are numerous online text programs to choose from. General and Ethics credit are available. Does the KBA charge members to post Online Classifieds?

KBA members can post any classified for free and the information is listed for 30 days on the KBA website at Online Classifieds. In addition to job notices and position wanted announcements, the Online Classifieds will provide an opportunity for KBA members and non-members to post and view office share/rental options, as well as lawyer-to-lawyer services, share good news and other specialized categories. If you have a new associate or someone has made partner, please post a classified about it. Do you have old furniture you would like to sell? Use the Classifieds to help. Each week we will highlight the more recent classifieds in our weekly email.

How can I join the Lawyer Referral & Information Service (LRIS)?

The KBA Lawyer Referral & Information Service is a trusted source for referrals. Your participation assures the public that they will receive a referral to a capable and experienced attorney. The annual cost to join LRIS is $100.00 for up to four panels. Membership is open to any active member of the KBA. You are required to carry professional liability insurance, complete at least 15 credit hours in the 12 month period prior to application, enter into a written fee agreement with the client, and abide by the policies and procedures of LRIS. Click here to join the Lawyer Referral & Information Service. The KBA Lawyer Referral & Information Service is an approved Intermediary Organization and trusted source for referrals. Special discounts are available during the first two years in which an attorney has been admitted to practice.

What is an Intermediary Organization?

Intermediary Organizations can include organizations such as lawyer advertising cooperatives, lawyer referral services, prepaid legal Service providers and other similar organizations which are governed by Rule 44 of the Supreme Court of Tennessee. In addition, the Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct define an Intermediary Organization at Rule 7.6. All Intermediary Organizations must register with the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility. Doing business with an unregistered Intermediary Organization may bring sanctions to the attorney.

What is the Knoxville Barristers and how can I become involved?

The Knoxville Barristers are lawyers who are members of the Knoxville Bar Association and who are under 36 years of age or have been practicing law less than five years. As a member of the KBA, you are automatically a member of the Knoxville Barristers if you meet the above criteria as a "young lawyer". Become involved in the 20 KBA committees and 8 sections at no additional charge. We need your input and your innovative ideas. If you are a young lawyer, you can become involved with the Barristers, the young lawyer division of the KBA. Or volunteer to write for our monthly newsletter DICTA, consider speaking at one of our CLE presentations or public education programs such as Community Law School or LawTalk, or become involved in our non-profit program to help answer simple legal questions for non-profit organizations.

The KBA has partnered with local merchants to provide discounts on products and services exclusively to KBA members. The KBA also offers more than 80 live and online CLE programs to members at discounted rates.

What free resources are offered by the KBA?

Members receive the weekly e-newsletter News You Can Use to stay informed of events and CLE and receive timely updates of all that is happening in the Knoxville legal community. During the legislative session, members receive the Legislative Update e-newsletter prepared weekly by Senator Doug Overbey. Members also receive DICTA, the KBA monthly magazine, which features articles on various topics ranging from an overview of Bar activities, changes in the law, profiles on area attorneys and judges, and important court decisions.

What programs are available through the KBA?

The Knoxville Bar Association created the Mentor for the Moment program to pair attorneys who have questions or problems in a particular area of legal expertise with the guidance of a more experienced Mentor attorney. The KBA also created the Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers Committee to provide assistance to lawyers, law firms and families of lawyers suffering from alcoholism, addiction or other mental or emotional problems that impair the lawyers' ability to practice law. Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers is a free, confidential membership service of the Knoxville Bar Association.
