The mission of the Access to Justice Committee is to facilitate and encourage the KBA and its members in their efforts (1) to ensure access to the justice system by all persons without regard to income; and (2) to provide direct pro bono service to low-income persons in our community through participation in the Pro Bono Project, Barrister's initiatives, CASA and other programs.

The ADR Section's goal is to promote the use of appropriate forms of dispute resolution in Knox County and to develop the KBA's ability to meet some of the public's need for mediators, arbitrators, and others who can help resolve disputes at less social cost than the judicial process.

The Archives Committee's primary objective is to collect, store and preserve current materials of interest to the Knoxville Bar Association as a whole. As always, pictures, articles, or other documents bearing on the activities and personalities of the Knoxville Bar Association are welcomed by the Archives Committee.

The primary mission of the CLE Committee is to provide KBA members with affordable, high-quality continuing legal education seminars in numbers sufficient to help them satisfy annual CLE requirements. The CLE Committee is responsible for overseeing and approving all CLE programs sponsored by the KBA and for making recommendations to the Board regarding CLE policy. Each year, the KBA sponsors numerous live, online and video-taped replayed CLE seminars from which it derives a significant portion of its annual budget. The CLE Committee, along with various KBA committees, substantive law sections and KBA staff, develop and implement these programs utilizing volunteer speakers on local, state and national levels.

The Corporate Counsel Section is designed to create CLE, networking, social, newsletter and other “to be developed” opportunities that will enhance and improve the role of in-house attorneys and attorneys in private firms that handle corporate matters for their clients.

The Criminal Justice Section is open to all lawyers whose practice involves the criminal justice system. The Section’s purpose includes educating Section members and the general public about the criminal justice system and its purpose; fostering productive communication among Section members, members of the judiciary, and criminal justice agencies; and seeking improvement in the operation of the criminal justice system.

The Environmental Law Section is open to any attorney whose practice includes environmental, transactional or land use issues. The section will offer the opportunity to meet on a regular basis to discuss areas of common concern and develop a network providing access to members and professionals with environmental expertise.

The Family Law Section is open to any attorney practicing family law. The monthly meetings focus on local and state-wide issues relevant to the family law practitioner and provide a forum for discussion.

The Fee Dispute Resolution Committee ("The FDC") exists to provide assistance to both clients and lawyers when a dispute arises regarding attorney's fees and both parties agree to participate in the process in which the FDC issues a non-binding decision.

The Functions Committee is involved in the planning and directing of Knoxville Bar Association events during the year. The Committee assists in the planning and conducting of events including the Supreme Court Dinner and the Annual Law Day Luncheon.

The Government and Public Service Lawyers Section, open to all lawyers employed by any governmental entity, state, federal or local, including judicial clerks and attorneys with legal service agencies, has been organized to address the needs and concerns of government and public service lawyers which are not otherwise met by the organized Bar.

Knoxville Bar Association members help shape the legal profession's future by serving on one of the Bar's committees or participating in one or more of the Sections. KBA committees create and manage various projects, including offering networking and volunteer opportunities for members. Involvement in committees and sections gives you the opportunity to influence the direction of your bar association and to meet colleagues from throughout East Tennessee. The Interprofessional Relations Committee seeks to encourage mutually beneficial interaction among lawyers and other professionals in the community, such as physicians, accountants, financial planners, and the like. In addition, where existing relationships may be somewhat frayed at the edges, the Committee aims to find ways to promote a spirit of cooperation and better understanding.

This committee is dedicated to dealing with matters of interest to Bench and Bar and to improving relationships and communications between the judiciary and local attorneys. In addition to special projects, the committee formulates and administers the polling of KBA members to obtain periodic evaluations of the judiciary and certain other political offices for dissemination to the general public.

To assist the members of the Bar by providing information and helping to implement technology and management practices which will improve the members ability to provide more efficient and better quality services to the Public.

The Lawyer Referral & Information Service Committee is responsible for oversight of the Lawyer Referral & Information Service, including development and recommendation of policy and programmatic changes for the LRIS, the Speakers Bureau and the LAWLINE system.

The purpose of the committee is to provide assistance to lawyers suffering from alcoholism, addiction or other mental or emotional problems that impair the lawyers’ ability to practice law.

The KBA Legislative Committee serves as the liaison between the Bar Association and the Knox County members of the Tennessee General Assembly. The Committee is responsible for making individual contacts with legislators during the year, and advising them of specific issues of interest to KBA during the annual Legislative Session.

The Membership Committee has primary responsibility for assisting the KBA Executive Director in all membership-related functions, including designing the membership application and new member packets, publishing an annual Attorneys Directory, sustaining and pursuing membership benefits and acting as liaison to the members and sections.

The purpose of the Resolutions/Memorials committee is to provide a year to year record of the Knoxville Attorneys who pass into the Life Eternal. Each year the death of the individuals is noted and a notation is placed in the permanent records of the Knoxville Bar Association, and with the Chancery Court of Knox County, Tennessee.

The Minority Opportunities Committee will foster in the Knoxville legal community a climate of awareness of the particular needs of the minority lawyers and to implement programs designed to ensure that every attorney will have the opportunity to succeed professionally and participate in the affairs of the legal community without regard to race, color, creed, religion, or gender.

Reports to the KBA Board of Governors on ethics issues and is responsible for developing programs to maintain highest professional standards and practices.

The Publications Committee's primary responsibility is the preparation and publication of the Knoxville Bar Association's monthly newsletter, DICTA. Through DICTA, the Publications Committee attempts to inform the KBA membership of KBA sponsored events, recent activities of interest to the Knoxville Bar, and other information of general interest.

The Seniors Section is comprised of members over the age of 50. The Section meets three to four times per year. The section affords an opportunity for senior members to gather for fellowship and address interests unique to them, while staying abreast of KBA activities.

The purpose of this section is to create a network of members who either practice by themselves or in small firms to share information, pool resources and to identify specific management and marketing techniques designed for small firms and individual practices.

Investigates and handles complaints from the public, lawyers and judges about persons engaging in the unauthorized practice of law.

The Unmet Legal Needs of Children Committee plans CLEs and other events designed to increase awareness of the legal needs of children involved in the Tennessee judicial system. The Unmet Legal Needs of Children Committee partners with the Knoxville Bar Association Family Law Section and the related TBA committee to work toward resolving issues involving all aspects of the welfare of children.
