Join members of the KBA Corporate Counsel Section for an interactive discussion on the impact of the Affordable Care Act on employers, led by KBA member Ashley Trotto of Kennerly, Montgomery & Finley, P.C.
In 2014 and beyond, most employers will be tasked with answering questions about the Affordable Care Act. We invite you to join the Corporate Counsel Section on March 27th for a discussion of this complex and ever-changing body of law, to learn how it will affect employers and what employers need to know to be prepared. Topics will include an overview of the employer mandate, the basics of employee classification, and recent updates and delays.

KBA Corporate Counsel Section's Creates New Mentor for the Moment Program
Building on the success of the KBA's Mentor for the Moment Program which has been in place since 1996, the KBA's Corporate Counsel Section has recently decided to implement a separate mentor program open only to KBA members who are in an in-house position. The program will be limited to attorneys who practice law as employees of private sector organizations and who do not hold themselves out to the public for the practice of law.
Ask most anyone in the legal profession and they will likely agree that mentoring is one of the most critical components to a lawyer's success. A mentor can give a lawyer the tools needed to understand the professional and practice needs of in-house counsel. Corporate legal departments are typically much more complex than law firms, and have additional levels of reporting. What's more, when lawyers transition in-house, their day-to-day interactions involve more frequent contact with nonlawyers in the business lines of the organization, and their work demands more general business and political savvy. This can be a drastic change from their previous roles. The skills that were learned in mentoring relationships in law school or in firm life aren't necessarily congruent with what are needed to work effectively in-house.
We are asking in-house counsel to sign up so that we can share the list of mentors exclusively to those KBA members who serve as in-house counsel. We do not intend to release this list to other KBA members or post this information on the KBA website so we will ask members who receive the list to maintain the privacy of the in-house counsel listed.
