Tell us about your practice concentration.
My practice concentration has ranged from preliminary hearings and trials in area General Sessions Courts for misdemeanors and felonies up to felony jury trials in Federal Court. Although, there are no jury trials in General Sessions Court the elements for DUI, possession of drugs, robbery, and all other criminal offenses remain the same whether it's a bench trial as opposed to a jury trial. Moreover, arraignments, bond hearings and like issues can be part and parcel to those type cases regardless of the decision maker. All of the foregoing constitutes part of practice concentrations I have had or have.
General Sessions Courts also have a civil dimension and adjudicate civil disputes up to a $25,000.00 limit (exceptions) with a wide variety of cases under $25,000.00. I have experience in litigating those. Concentrations may periodically shift. That has proven true dating back to the eight years I served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Knoxville during which time the concentration of my practice there frequently involved advising and working with the police and fire departments on a daily basis.
What attributes do you possess that make you qualified for this position?
The attributes I possess that qualify me for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. VISION AND PROBLEM SOLVING
If elected, my vision for the Knox County General Sessions Court is to confer with the affected parties and determine whether a SPLIT DOCKET would help make the Knox County General Sessions Court more efficient as I believe it would and, if so, then implement it. There would be a 9:00 AM docket and a 1:30 PM docket which would be designated for hearings, only.
2.COMMON SENSE YOU CAN TRUST. If there is any court where common sense is especially important it's the General Sessions Court. The General Sessions Court is probably the front gate of the judicial system for most people. Most people who come into contact with the court system, civilly or criminally, probably at some point come into contact with the General Sessions Court.
3.LEGAL AND LIFE EXPERIENCE. My legal experience from practicing law over 20 years in a wide variety of legal practices and life experiences I have had which have given me broad perspective would be other attributes I believe qualify me for this position.
