Tell us about your practice concentration.
My practice is focused upon litigation in both state and federal court, with the majority of my practice devoted to representing citizens who have been charged with a crime. For fourteen years I prosecuted cases as an Assistant District Attorney, first in Sevier County, then later in Knox County. I have tried between 200 – 250 jury trials ranging from misdemeanors to first degree murder.
What attributes do you possess that make you qualified for this position?
For over twenty-six years I have devoted the majority of my professional life to the criminal justice system. I stood before several hundred juries and advocated my client's position, and I have prepared, negotiated and been a part of thousands of criminal cases. I know the human side of this system. I explained to victims of crimes why a case must be resolved due to legal or factual difficulty. I witnessed firsthand the anger and frustration of citizens who experienced repeated delays. I represented accused persons who could not cope with the enormity of their legal problem, or those who stubbornly refused to acknowledge what overwhelming evidence made clear they had done. Decisions made from the bench are not based upon what is popular, but rather are grounded in the law. I have proven that neither the unpopularity of the representation, nor threats against me, will prevent me from doing my job. I am not a casual observer of the criminal justice system who does not understand its inner workings. I have lived within this system, from both sides, for almost twenty-seven years.
