"The Role of East Tennessee Lawyers in Laying the Foundation for Modern Habeas and Civil Rights Law"
In honor of Law Day, the KBA will celebrate the legal profession with a CLE program presented by the Hon. Curtis L. Collier. He will explore how modern U.S. habeas and civil rights laws stand on a foundation laid in significant part by lawyers of east Tennessee at the turn of the twentieth century. In 1906, Chattanoogan Ed Johnson, a black man, was wrongfully accused of the rape of a white woman. He was convicted in a rushed and unjust trial and sentenced to death. A few days later, he was murdered by a lynch mob of white Chattanoogans with the complicity of Hamilton County Sheriff Joseph Shipp. Yet, throughout these tragic events, there were lawyers who fought for justice in ways that still resonate today.
